Steps to Take After a Natural Gas Leak in Your Home

May 04, 2022

How to Identify & Prevent Gas Leaks Throughout Your Residential Property

While natural gas is an important fossil fuel that powers the world, it’s deadly when inhaled in sufficient amounts. It’s also very flammable. That’s why everyone must know how to detect gas leaks, how to prevent them, and what to do when an emergency strikes.

Learn more about all these topics below, and if you ever have any questions about gas leaks in your home, don’t hesitate to call Midtown Plumbing Co for help!

How to Detect a Gas Leak

There are several signs of a natural gas leak in your home, which usually occur in gas pipes and appliances. Let’s go over them.

First and foremost, natural gas is colorless and odorless, so natural gas providers add odorants that give it a “rotten egg” smell for easier detection. If you notice this smell (and don’t have rotten eggs in your fridge), do NOT ignore it. Other signs of a leak include hissing sounds coming from gas pipes and/or appliances, air bubbles in underground piping outside your home, dying plants, and higher-than-normal utility bills.

It’s also important to know the signs of natural gas poisoning in someone. These include flu-like symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. If any of these signs are present in someone living in your home, seek medical attention immediately, especially if they coincide with the signs of a gas leak.

If you do smell or notice a gas leak, shut off the main gas valve to your property to prevent the release of more natural gas. Everyone in the household should know how to do this. Once the gas valve is shut off, evacuate the property immediately and call 911 or the gas provider. Please do not enter the property again until it is deemed safe to do so by a professional.

How to Prevent Gas Leaks

Preventive measures to take so that leaks don’t happen in the first place include installing carbon monoxide detectors throughout the home and having all gas pipes and appliances inspected for leaks regularly. Make sure small children are aware of the dangers of natural gas and know what the plan is if they detect a problem.
